If you’re looking for a new place to visit in Kuala Lumpur, Ombak KLCC is quickly making its case as the city’s latest must-see lifestyle destination. Making its debut over the Merdeka weekend, the new culture-led precinct opened with Jiwa Merdeka—four days of art, music, food, heritage and community celebrating the many layers of Malaysian identity.
Held from 28 to 31 August, the inaugural celebration brought 69 activations to life, transforming Ombak KLCC into a lively meeting point for contemporary city life and Malaysian culture. From graffiti and Chinese yo-yo performances to Borneo dances, bhangra and local creative showcases, there was plenty to explore.
The Jiwa Merdeka Immersive Experience offered one of the most memorable stops, bringing three of Kuala Lumpur’s cultural neighbourhoods together. Visitors could try saree tying, kolam and garland making inspired by Little India; Chinese drums, calligraphy and ink painting from Chinatown; alongside songket weaving, batik canting, congkak and batu seremban inspired by Kampung Baru.
Naturally, no Malaysian celebration would be complete without music. Over four evenings, names including Sheila Majid, Yuna, Dayang Nurfaizah, Reshmonu, Atilia, Vince Chong and DJ Santan took to the stage, adding a distinctly local soundtrack to Ombak’s first big weekend.
But beyond the Merdeka festivities, Ombak KLCC is the destination to watch. Spanning approximately 420,000 sq ft across seven levels in the heart of the KLCC Precinct, the new development brings together curated retail, dining, cultural experiences, an open-air plaza and rooftop Sky Garden. It is also directly connected to MRT Persiaran KLCC Station, making it an easy new stop for a day out in the city.
At its cultural centre is Galeri PETRONAS, occupying approximately 126,356 sq ft and designed as a new space for exhibitions, artistic expression and cultural exchange. The gallery will also introduce Malaysia’s first cantilevered art gallery, adding another reason for culture lovers to keep Ombak on their KL itinerary.
With its mix of culture, creativity, dining, retail and open-air experiences, Ombak KLCC feels less like another shopping destination and more like a new way to experience Kuala Lumpur. And if Jiwa Merdeka is any indication, this is one new KL address worth watching.
