If you aren’t already a fan of the show Fixer Upper on HGTV (Astro Channel 731), then you’re in for a treat. Joanna Gaines and Chip have a loyal following of fans for their signature style and interior design, which many of us fall in love with and adore. Often wanting to recreate some of their styles into our homes – Joanna uses a lot of recycled items that she finds at thrift stores or flea markets and turns them into something functional and new.
Here are some tips from Joanna herself for all of you fellow fans:
1. Create that open concept space
In most episodes, Joanna is quick to knock down walls and create a spacious open concept to the homes. This is key to getting the style she creates so effortlessly.
2. Source of natural light
After watching Fixer Upper, I’ve appreciated the power natural light can have in a home. It brightens up a space and makes it feel open and airy and just way more liveable. Look for ways to bring more natural light into your home especially the living spaces like the living room or kitchen.
3. Natural and light colours
Keeping to a consistent colour tone through the rest of your house is key and go for neutral shades – it keeps your homes elegant and fresh.
4. Incorporate natural pieces into your space
One of my favourite things about Joanna is her vision of using natural materials like wood and repurposing them into features that are functional – such as wooden shelves, or a tabletop. It adds warmth and character to a space. Think rustic, modern, reclaimed.
5. Less is more
You don’t need to fill up a space, sometimes it’s just paying attention to the little details and adding that bit of colour or character. Joanna and Chip prove that a minimal approach can work wonders and that you don’t need to spend too much money!
6. Add texture to your walls
Joanna always adds a little bit of texture (maybe with using old doors) or a bit of personalisation to a wall (maybe with a quote or your initials) and that adds so much character and charm to your living space.
