Miss Grand Malaysia’s National Costume Inspired by the Legendary Mak Yong Primadonna, Khatijah Awang

Miss Grand Malaysia Jasebel Robert will represent our country on the stage of Miss Grand International 2020 competition in Bangkok, Thailand in a national costume – the Mak Yong costume – designed by Kelantan-born Ain Mohamad whose inspiration of the costume is an adaption from the late Mak Yong primadonna, Khatijah Awang.

Mak Yong is an ancient traditional theatrical dance performed for entertainment and healing ceremonies mainly in Kelantan and was declared by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

This stunning national costume, called Mak Yong – The Legend of Khatijah Awang, is made of yellow silk ornamented with golden embroidery and sophisticatedly decorated with diamond brooches and tambour beading of sequin and beads.

“I take this opportunity to be a great ambassador for our country Malaysia, and by wearing the Mak Yong costume is the best representation to continue to promote this dying culture especially amongst younger generation,” said Jasebel Robert, Miss Grand Malaysia 2020.

Before her departure to Thailand, Jasebel alongside with Miss Grand Malaysia Organization team was given the blessing by YB Dato Sri Hajjah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia who extended her best wishes to Jasebel.
