Some of us have massive food cravings during PMS (Pemenstrual syndrome), while others may experience it during the actual period. And the lucky ones don’t experience cravings at all. I personally crave for fatty and sugary foods like pastries and cake one week leading up to my period.
The female body and hormones can be extremely tricky to understand during this special time of the month. With that being said, let’s explore some of the most common cravings we girls tend to have before and during our period.
Sugar and carbs
It’s extremely common for women to crave sugary and high carbs foods like rice, bread and pasta before and during period. These cravings are usually signs of low serotonin and low blood sugar levels. Serotonin is the “happy” chemical in our brain, which is why when levels are low, we crave for sweets and carbs which produces serotonin.
Chocolate is probably one of the most common cravings. It taste good and makes you feel good.
Chocolate is said to be connected with positive emotions and love, hence a comfort food to many of us. If you crave for chocolate before and during period, it is a sign of magnesium and iron deficiency. Chocolate contains both magnesium and iron, hence that explains why we crave for it even more.
Studies have proved that during our period we experience low levels of calcium. Hence we tend to crave for rich deserts that are high in calcium such as cakes and ice creams. Some women generally love ice cream, but they tend to crave more before and during period.
