Places can surprised you, especially when you venture off into them with an open mind and a curious eye to explore and absorb the wonders of different cultures. Bhutan is no exception to that rule; nestled in the Himalayas between India and China, most of us would not think of it as a key destination when it comes to street fashion.

But lo and behold, it has slowly been gaining momentum as a destination for unique and fashionable street wear merely by celebrating its national dress code. And this is by choice! Through the 1990s, there once used to be a strict dress code imposed, but even though that has passed and the rules are more relaxed, many still willingly don their national dress code throughout the streets of Bhutan.

What’s very interesting is that it is now being combing with Western fashion influences. This is being documented by Karma Wangchuk’s Bhutan Street Fashion Project – a street style blog he started in 2010, which demonstrates the modernisation of the tiny Himalayan country through what people on the street are wearing.

While many countries are starting to look the same in terms of their fashion choices, it’s refreshing to see a country take pride in its national identity and clothing, and hold onto its roots even more! It’s very easy to lose identity in this ever-globalised world, but holding on to what makes your country unique cannot come at a more crucial period.
