1. As an experienced ironman triathlete, do you think completing a marathon would be much easier than a triathlon?

Running in a marathon is equally as tough as completing an Ironman, as there are different distances we have to complete for both.

2. What are the training differences and similarities between a marathon and triathlon?

In triathlon training, we need to focus on three disciplines, swimming cycling and running, and we have to ensure that we participate in a proper regime, so we are not burnt out before the race day. On the other hand, in a marathon, you have only one goal which is to run and train. In terms of similarities, both sports require you to undergo speed intervals and endurance training.

3. Your training process for a marathon – How did you prepare yourself, both mentally and physically?

I prepare myself by planning out a training program which includes HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) – strength and conditioning training. I do a few sessions in a week to boost my fitness up a notch. I usually train indoors for HIIT and short speed at Hiit2Fit KL studio and outdoors for my endurance training. I usually also prepare and get ready all my training gears the night before and wake up the next day with a target that I want to achieve.

4. In addition to your training, what else do you do to help improve your performance (e.g. diets, sport gears)?

Clean diet makes a difference in my performance. I usually eat everything but consume more healthy fat and protein rich food which helps in building lean muscle mass.

When it comes to sports gears, I am very picky. High performance materials and fitting are crucial for me to run comfortably to achieve my targeted results. I highly recommend the Under Armour HOVR Run Suite as it helps me to track my run with the MapMyRun app to achieve maximum results.

5. Do you perform any superstitious or rituals during the race day?

I’m a Christian and I pray harder in the morning of the race day. I pray at the starting line as well to give me the strength to overcome any difficulties that I might face during the race.

6. What kind of things do you think about to keep focus as you run? What mental techniques do you practice to keep yourself motivated during the tough moments?

During my trainings, I focus to keep my mind and body connected. I pay attention to my foot strike and posture which allows me to be able to run efficiently and brainstorm on business ideas when I run. My goal is to execute my training plan almost perfectly which motivates me to keep going. I like to challenge my limits and go against all the odds to the other side and this mindset makes me push through all obstacles.

7. What do you enjoy the most from participating in the marathon?

There is no greater sense of satisfaction that I gain from running. Running makes me feel empowered and resilient. Everything is indescribable such as the atmosphere, cheering from spectators, body soreness and the struggle.

8. If you could give a single piece of advice to new runners what would it be?

Enjoy every mile and be patience with the pace. Run it with your heart and it will grow on you.
