Huawei MatePad Pro: Is It Worth Buying?

Two months ago, Huawei released its latest flagship tablet, Huawei MatePad Pro in Malaysia. We have heard a lot of positive feedback about the new Huawei MatePad Pro since it was first unveiled in the China market end of last year. We were fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to get our hands on this new tablet ahead of its release in Malaysia, and our editor had shared her experience of using the tablet for almost 2 months during the lockdown period in the previous article.

In this article, we will explore further about the specifications and features that come with the Huawei MatePad Pro that is positioned as the flagship tablet from Huawei, which inherits the series name of ‘Mate’. Is this tablet worth to buy at the price tags of RM2,399 for 4G version and RM3,299 for the just launched 5G version? Let’s find out.

Overall Look and Hardware Features

Huawei MatePad Pro comes with 10.8-inch screen with a 90% screen-to-body ratio

Equipped with a large 10.8-inch 2K QHD screen with a 90% screen-to-body ratio, supporting the DCI-P3 cinematic colour gamut and HUAWEI ClariVu Display Enhancement technology, Harman Kardon-tuned stereo speakers and five-capsule microphone, the Huawei MatePad Pro definitely provides a more satisfying visual and audio experience. The slim and symmetrical body design makes it more eye-catching and sleeker as a whole. The tablet is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 990 flagship chipset and up to 8GB dual-channel RAM for smooth multitasking. It boosts a powerful 7250mAh battery which can last you up to 12 hours on one charge, and a 12-layer cooling system allowing the tablet to stay cool even under high load. What’s more, it’s not only supports fast charging, but also wireless charging and reverse wireless charging that allows for an easy and intuitive charging experience.

writing.

Moreover, the MatePad Pro is launched alongside some compatible accessories, including the HUAWEI M-Pencil and Smart Magnetic Keyboard, making it much more versatile and productive. The lightweight HUAWEI M-Pencil stylus is 160 mm long with an integrated hexagonal body, features 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity, for a flawless writing and drawing experience. Pairing through Bluetooth, it can serve as a pen, painting brush, writing brush, or marker, depending on your need, with support of smart erasing to provide users a convenient tool at their disposal.

the Smart Magnetic Keyboard offers comfortable typing experience

Users can also connect the Smart Magnetic Keyboard to the MatePad Pro via Bluetooth pairing to turn the tablet into a laptop in seconds. The Keyboard folio is made of fine-premium leather and features a 1.3mm key travel distance for comfortable typing experience similar to that of a laptop. The sleek design of the portable keyboard folio doesn’t add much bulk, and also give good protection to the tablet, making it easy to carry around in the bag.

Operating System and Application Features

Huawei MatePad Pro runs on EMUI 10.0.1 based on Android 10

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro runs on Android 10 Open-Source, using Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and the latest EMUI 10.0.1. The tablet comes with a good range of intelligent features, including Multi-screen Collaboration, Multi-Window, HUAWEI APP Multiplier, new WPS Office and more.

Multi-screen Collaboration

Leveraging EMUI10’s distributed technology, HUAWEI Share enables the Multi-screen Collaboration to allow seamless cross-platform interaction between the tablet and Huawei smartphone for collaboration, data transfer and multi-screen control. This feature also allow the smartphone to access the tablet’s peripherals such as the keyboard, screen and speaker, enable the user to pick up calls or respond to text messages directly from the tablet, and use the tablet to simultaneously unlock their smartphone, facilitating a seamless multi-device experience.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro supports Multi-Window

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro also supports Multi-Window, a split-screen feature that allows up to three apps to display on the same screen at once. With this feature, users can launch Zoom App on the left side of the screen for a video meeting, and at the same time open HUAWEI Notepad on the right side of the screen to take notes, or even drag a third app from the dock to display in a floating window.

While with the new HUAWEI APP Multiplier, users can split one app into two windows for a dual-view experience on the landscape orientation. The size of the windows can be adjusted to fit the needs of the user by simply dragging the border. As of now, there are around 3,000 top global apps support HUAWEI APP Multiplier.

Nebo for HUAWEI

The new version of WPS Office comes with some new additions such as voice notes and smart brush supports. The voice note support allows for voice-based notetaking during meetings, while the new smart pencil-brush mode will be automatically enabled the moment your stylus is tapped on an open document for intuitive operations. Furthermore, Nebo for HUAWEI, a powerful note-taking app with capability of recognising six different of handwriting, allows users to create handwritten notes easily and quickly.

The Huawei MatePad Pro also come with MEETime, a brand-new video calling feature that possess two-way screen sharing function to allow users to share their screens whilst on the call, as well as make notes and edits in real time.

Although Google Apps are not available for the HUAWEI MatePad Pro, users still can access to many popular apps via the HUAWEI AppGallery and Petal Search tool. The Petal Search is a dedicated app search tool to help you find apps that you can’t locate in the AppGallery, and it can be downloaded from the App Gallery.

In Malaysia, the Huawei MatePad Pro 4G that comes in two colors – Midnight Grey and Pearl White, retails at the price of RM2,399, and the just launched 5G version that’s available in Forest Green, is priced at RM3,299. For every purchase of the HUAWEI MatePad Pro, customers will receive a package of free gifts worth up to RM199. For customers who wish to get the Smart Magnetic Keyboard, it is priced at RM499 with FREE HUAWEI M-Pencil worth RM299.

Is It Worth to Buy?

Overall, the Huawei MatePad Pro is a high performance tablet that’s designed for maximum productivity and entertainment. It’s empowered with cutting-edge technology as well as smart and intelligent features that enable users to work and play in the smarter way. In our opinion, the 4G version is good enough to meet the daily work and entertainment needs. For better productivity, get the Smart Magnetic Keyboard and HUAWEI M-Pencil too. Of course, if you seek for faster speeds, higher bandwidth and lower latency experiences, and have a little more budget, you can go for the 5G version.
