Daniel Arsham x adidas Originals Revamped New York Sneaker Conceals A Secret Message

Another collaborative effort has dropped. By the look of things, we expect the year to usher in a few more. Next in line is the collaboration between New York-based contemporary artist Daniel Arsham and German sportswear giant adidas Originals who have teamed up to create a revamped version of the retro classic New York sneaker.

Stripping the New York silhouette back to its rawest form, adidas Originals by Daniel Arsham is reimagined in deteriorated canvas construction with frayed edges, rendered in tonal Chalk White. What makes the understated pair a cool must-have, however, is a hidden message printed on along the side that says “THE PAST IS PRESENT”, only visible when placed under an ultraviolet light. The concealed element takes a nod at the artist’s fascination with archaeology and 20th century cultural artefacts where Arsham imagines through his lens, the discovery of objects of today as future artefacts. In this instance, the adidas as an everlasting cultural symbol that stands the test of time.

While the shape and web EVA-wrapped midsole remain the same as the original, a hand drawn graphic logo printed on each tongue and heel tab breathes new life into the old skool classic. The reworked runner comes in canvas texture upper, rubber outsole, leather lining, leather sockliner and also matching white laces stitched 3-stripes with metal aglets.

Take a look at the short film ‘Hourglass’, a story unveiling the artist’s life and creative work in part-documentary, part-work of fiction told in three parts: Past, Present and Future below.
