For the most part, all forms of cardio machines have the same potential for weight loss. But when it comes to getting results, treadmill may not be your best bet for efficient cardio.

Seth Maynard, director of fitness and lead instructor at Switch Playground in New York City says stationery climbers, often known as StepMills or StairMasters is the most effective cardio machine at the gym.

“It’s actually my favorite cardio machine. It lifts and tightens everything, burns a lot of calories, and is easier on the knees,” Maynard shared in an interview with Well and Good.

Stair climbing is one of the most underrated cardio machines for people with chronic joint problems. The machine works your glutes, thighs, quads, and calves, while putting less pressure on your joints than a treadmill.

Maynard said, “It lifts and tightens everything, burns a lot of calories, and is easier on the knees.” On top of that, you only need less than 30 minutes to get an effective workout because you’re righting gravity as you exercise. “You can also let go of the handles and keep your chest up high, which is going to increase core strength and engage your stabilizers,” Maynard shared.

Don’t take your gym membership for granted. Now go lace up and start climbing!
