But it doesn\u2019t have to be this way.<\/p>\n<p>Specialist outdoor activity website timeoutdoors asked 1000s of its members about the obstacles they faced when getting more active and has come up with some sure-fire ways to help live your best life.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Set a goal<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t just tell yourself you\u2019re going to start running\/run more\/run faster, pick an event and sign up! That way, you\u2019ve got a specific goal to focus on \u2013 not just a vague aim of \u2018getting fitter\u2019 or \u2018being more active\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Make a plan<\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve set a goal, plan how you\u2019re going to achieve it by breaking it down into milestones. If you\u2019re taking on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeoutdoors.com\/events\/runs\/half-marathons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">half marathon<\/a>, sign up for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeoutdoors.com\/events\/runs\/10K-runs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">10K run<\/a> as part of your training. If you\u2019re planning to summit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeoutdoors.com\/challenges\/overseas\/Kilimanjaro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kilimanjaro<\/a>, take on Snowdon or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeoutdoors.com\/challenges\/UK\/challenge-walks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">challenge walk<\/a>. And if you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeoutdoors.com\/charities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">fundraising<\/a>, break it into chunks and work out how to raise each chunk rather than the entire amount.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Be realistic<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re a regular 10K runner, committing to a half marathon sounds doable but maybe leave that Ironman for later. If you\u2019ve just completed couch to 5K, maybe look at your first 10K. And if you\u2019re still slumped on the couch, get out walking or head down to your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parkrun.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">local parkrun<\/a> \u2013 there are hundreds across the country at 9am on Saturday mornings and they\u2019re free! It\u2019s a great way to make a start in a positive and supportive environment.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Don\u2019t overdo it<\/h3>\n<p>Ignore the \u2018no-pain, no-gain\u2019 regimes. Recognise that it\u2019s going to take time to get fitter. timeoutdoors are big fans of low intensity training \u2013 it\u2019s easier to keep up, causes far fewer injuries and is much better for your overall health and wellbeing. Avoid overdoing it \u2013 one of the most common reasons for quitting fitness resolutions \u2013 as it\u2019s more fun and sustainable!<\/p>\n<h3>5. Eat naturally<\/h3>\n<p>Alongside low intensity training, timeoutdoors also believe in burning fat for fuel by cutting down carbs \u2013 such as cereal, bread, pasta &amp; rice &#8211; and eating healthy fats as part of a natural diet. Try eggs for breakfast; swap the lunchtime sarnies for a salad; and cut out junk\/processed food and sugar altogether \u2013 you\u2019ll be amazed at how much more energy you have.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Use peer pressure<\/h3>\n<p>Training with friends makes it more likely that you\u2019ll get out rather than crashing out on the couch. Ideally persuade your friends to sign up as well and train together \u2013 or at least tell them about your goal and then you\u2019ll have to do it! Find an activity you enjoy<\/h3>\n<p>Some people aren\u2019t built for running, some feel vulnerable on a bike and not everyone takes to water like a duck. But there are lots of ways to get more active \u2013 the key is to find an activity that you love as training then stops being a chore. Mixing it up is also a great way to keep it fun.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Keep kit simple<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t fall into the shiny, new gear trap. Unless you\u2019re taking on an ultra marathon in the Sahara or an Ironman in South Africa, expensive kit doesn\u2019t make a huge amount of difference \u2013 there\u2019s really no point spending thousands on a new bike if you\u2019re still carrying around a pot belly!<\/p>\n<h3>9. Monitor progress<\/h3>\n<p>parkrun is brilliant for this. Each time you complete a run they\u2019ll email your results and whether you got a new personal best \u2013 and you can track progress on their website. Don\u2019t get bogged down with complicated fitness trackers \u2013 focus on getting active and not faffing with gadgets on the couch.<\/p>\n<h3>10. Give yourself a break<\/h3>\n<p>Putting your body under relentless pressure is a sure-fire way to get dejected, demotivated, injured or all three. Take at least a few days a week off and enjoy the relaxation. Believe it or not, it\u2019s even OK to have the odd beer or glass of wine on a \u2018recovery day\u2019.
