Red meat refers to all types of mammalian muscle meat, such as beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse, and goat. This finding was a research result of the Working Group of 22 experts from 10 countries for\u00a0the IARC Monographs Programme which classified that the consumption of <strong>red meat<\/strong> as probably carcinogenic to humans, based on limited evidence that the consumption of red meat causes cancer in humans and strong mechanistic evidence supporting a carcinogenic effect.<\/p>\n<p>The IARC Working Group considered more than 800 studies that investigated associations of more than a dozen types of cancer with the consumption of <strong>red meat<\/strong> or <strong>processed meat<\/strong> in many countries and populations with diverse diets. Consumption of processed meats like ham, bacon and hot dogs, which are often high in saturated fat and sodium, should be limited.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy strives to communicate healthy eating messages that emphasize a balance of food and beverages within energy needs, rather than any one food or meal.
