Red packets\u00a0are also known as lucky money or New Year’s money, holding a monetary value are given to and received from friends and families. The money in red envelopes is also known as\u00a0\u538b\u5c81\u94b1 (y\u0101 su\u00ec qi\u00e1n). By giving the money to children, elders are hoping to pass on a year of good fortune and blessings. On the other side, some younger generation will also give Ang Pau to elders as a blessing of longevity and a show of gratitude.<\/p>\n

According to the legends, there was a monster named Nian. Every year, it would come out from the forest at night and devour the entire villages. The steps of protection against Nian during New Year’s Eve transformed into the Spring Festival celebration.<\/p>\n
On top of that, parents would also give children money that night so that the children would have something to scare the monster or other evil spirits.<\/p>\n
So, sending red packets shows that you want to pass off good luck, happiness and your blessings to others. When you receiving a red envelope, make sure that the giver is not present when you open it, otherwise, it could be seen as impolite.<\/p>\n
