In case you have been living under a rock for the past few days, we are now halfway through the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), which held in Kuala Lumpur from August 16 to 31 this year.<\/p>\n

To help you keep up-to-date, here are 10 of the fun facts you should know about the biennial multi-sport event.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> This year,\u00a0Malaysia has the honour\u00a0of playing host to athletes from 11 Southeast Asian countries for the 2017 SEA Games. The countries are Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Malaysia is proudly hosting the Olympic Games for the sixth\u00a0time, having previously hosted the\u00a01965, 1971, 1977, 1989, and 2001\u00a0editions of the games.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> The theme is “Rising Together”. Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin told\u00a0Channel News Asia<\/a>\u00a0in June\u00a0in regards to the\u00a0to the reasoning behind the name.<\/p>\n

“I chose the theme ‘Rising Together’ because this (year) is 50 years of ASEAN and it’s important that we celebrate the coming of age of a region that is more confident, has come further because we are together, because we are more integrated now\u00a0… so hopefully it is a celebration for all of us.”<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong>\u00a0The logo of the 2017 SEA Games\u00a0is an image of a Wau Bulan, a crescent-shaped kite traditionally well known\u00a0on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong>\u00a0The official mascots of the 2017 SEA Games were inspired by the\u00a0graceful and powerful Malayan Tiger. Named Rimau\u2014a name that is an abbreviation\u00a0of the Games’ core values which are\u00a0Respect, Integrity, Move, Attitude and Unity.<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong> Team Malaysia\u00a0is\u00a0represented by 844* athletes consisting of 469 men and 375 women across all sports.<\/p>\n

*These numbers are based on contingent entries and correct as at August 24, 2017.<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong>\u00a0Instead of a games village,\u00a0all contingents were put up in nine\u00a0hotels.<\/p>\n

\nHotel Royal Chulan (Brunei)
\nHotel Sunway Putra (Cambodia and Philippines)
\nHotel The Royale Chulan Bintang (Indonesia)
\nHotel Swiss Garden (Laos)
\nHotel Federal Kuala Lumpur (Myanmmar)
\nHotel Double Tree by Hilton (Singapore)
\nHotel Istana (Thailand)
\nHotel Berjaya Times Square (Timor-Leste and Vietnam).<\/p>\n

8.<\/strong>\u00a0All the events will be held in Kuala Lumpur except for sailing (Langkawi) and equestrian (Terengganu).<\/p>\n

9.\u00a0<\/strong>The medals of the games were designed by Royal Selangor, which is also the designer company for the torch and the baton.\u00a0You will also be able to view an installation of the KL2017 torch and medal at\u00a0Royal Selangor Visitor Centre (RSVC), from 9am to 5pm, till\u00a0September 23, 2017.\u00a0Official KL 2017 Games merchandise will also be available for purchase.<\/p>\n

10.<\/strong> The closing ceremonies will be held at the newly-upgraded Bukit Jalil National Stadium.<\/p>\n
