The participants had blood samples taken and their weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The study leader Dr Laura Hardie noted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeds.ac.uk\/news\/article\/4079\/insufficient_sleep_could_be_adding_to_your_waistline\">in a statement<\/a>, &#8220;Because we found that adults who reported sleeping less than their peers were more likely to be overweight or obese, our findings highlight the importance of getting enough sleep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How much sleep we need differs between people,&#8221; she continued, &#8220;but the current consensus is that seven to nine hours is best for most adults.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the study also revealed that lack of adequate sleep is associated with\u00a0poor metabolic health.\u00a0Those who slept less also had less good cholesterol, aka HDL cholesterol, which\u00a0remove fats and cholesterol from cells.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0previous studies have suggested that\u00a0shortened sleep can lead to poor dietary choices,\u00a0the study did not find any connection between\u00a0shortened sleep and a less healthy diet,\u00a0a fact that surprised the\u00a0Leeds team.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17699\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17699\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/waist_2561731b.jpg\" alt=\"Image: telegraph\" width=\"720\" height=\"487\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: telegraph<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Greg Potter, one of the researchers, said the number of people with obesity worldwide has more than doubled since 1980.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, a study published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(14)60460-8\/fulltext#\" target=\"_blank\">British medical journal\u00a0<em>The Lancet<\/em>\u00a0<\/a> showing that almost half of Malaysian adults are overweight or obese\u2014possibly the highest rate in Asia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read also:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/health\/slimming-weight-loss\/why-is-belly-fat-the-hardest-to-shed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Why Is Belly Fat the Hardest to Shed?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; Cover Image:\u00a0happy-dreams.hr<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People who have insufficient\u00a0sleep are at increased risk of developing obesity and have poorer metabolic health, according to a\u00a0new\u00a0study\u00a0by the University of Leeds in the UK.
