Well, it would seems that these\u00a0sugar substitutes were in fact fewer calories than sugar.\u00a0However,\u00a0a new research claims that\u00a0sugar substitutes could actually lead to extra pounds.<\/p>\n<p>New research from the University of Manitoba in Canada,\u00a0published in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/lookup\/doi\/10.1503\/cmaj.161390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Medical Association Journal<\/a>, shows that replacing sugar with calories sweetener\u00a0\u2014 products such as aspartame, sucralose and stevioside\u00a0\u2014 contributes to the risks\u00a0of many diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16067\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/sugar.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Sunny Forest\/shutterstock.com\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/sugar.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/sugar-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/sugar-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/sugar-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/sugar-630x420.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: shutterstock.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A team from the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI) studied\u00a0the connections between artificial sweetener and body weight by reviewing\u00a037 studies, which followed a combined 400,000 people over an average period of 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The review\u00a0showed no consistent evidence that low-calorie sweeteners helped people manage their weight. On top of that, the result\u00a0extends previous meta-analyses that showed higher risks of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension with regular consumption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom all of this research, there really wasn\u2019t firm evidence of a long-term benefit of artificial sweeteners. And there was some evidence of long-term harm from long-term consumption,\u201d said lead author of the study, Dr Meghan Azad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes.jpg\" alt=\"diabetes\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-696x465.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-629x420.jpg 629w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some researchers surmise\u00a0that the sweeteners disrupt\u00a0a person\u2019s microbiome, a collection of gut bacteria crucial for the absorption of nutrients. Regularly eating or drinking artificial ssweeteners may also cause people to crave sweeter foods more often.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s too early to completely avoid artificial sweeteners, still it&#8217;s advisable to cut back on any and all sweeteners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople need to be reducing their overall intake of sweeteners whether they have calories or not,\u201d says Susan Swithers, a professor in the department of psychological studies at Purdue University who has also studied artificial sweeteners (but was not involved in the new study).\u00a0\u201cIf we are consuming them appropriately it might not matter.
