{"id":42534,"date":"2017-04-03T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T01:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/?p=42534"},"modified":"2017-04-03T14:41:59","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T06:41:59","slug":"lets-talk-depression-world-health-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/health\/lets-talk-depression-world-health-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Talk about Depression on this World Health Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-health-day\/2017\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Day focuses\u00a0on depression<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Celebrated April 7\u00a0every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of\u00a0World Health Organisation (WHO), the theme of World Health Day 2017 campaign is <strong><em>\u201cDepression: let\u2019s talk\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, with aims to provide better information to the general public about\u00a0depression, its causes and possible consequences, including suicide, and what help is or can be available for prevention and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest WHO estimates, more than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015.\u00a0Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. Lack of support for people with mental disorders, coupled with a fear of stigma, prevent many from accessing the treatment they need to live healthy, productive lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/woman-1006102_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"woman-1006102_960_720\" width=\"960\" height=\"541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/woman-1006102_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/woman-1006102_960_720-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/woman-1006102_960_720-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/woman-1006102_960_720-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/woman-1006102_960_720-696x392.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/woman-1006102_960_720-745x420.jpg 745w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Depression?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depression is an illness characterised by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a loss of energy;<\/li>\n<li>a change in appetite;<\/li>\n<li>sleeping more or less;<\/li>\n<li>anxiety;<\/li>\n<li>reduced concentration;<\/li>\n<li>indecisiveness;<\/li>\n<li>restlessness;<\/li>\n<li>feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and<\/li>\n<li>thoughts of self-harm or suicide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"r\"><strong>Who will get Depression?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"r\">Anyone. Depression can affect anyone, regardless of\u00a0age, sex, or social status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"r\">For this World Health Day 2017, WHO has\u00a0chosen\u00a0to pay particular attention to three groups that\u00a0are disproportionally affected:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"r\">adolescents and young adults;<\/li>\n<li class=\"r\">women of childbearing age (particularly following childbirth); and<\/li>\n<li class=\"r\">older adults (over 60s).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"module_title\"><strong>What you can do for people who are depressed<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"disc\">\n<li>Make it clear that you want to help, listen without judgement, and offer support.<\/li>\n<li>Find out more about depression.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage them to seek professional help when available. Offer to accompany them to appointments.<\/li>\n<li>If medication is prescribed, help them to take it as prescribed. Be patient; it usually takes a few weeks to feel better.<\/li>\n<li>Help them with everyday tasks and to have regular eating and sleeping patterns.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage regular exercise and social activities.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage them to focus on the positive, rather than the negative.<\/li>\n<li>If they are thinking about self-harm, or have already intentionally harmed themselves, do not leave them alone. Seek further help from the emergency services or a health-care professional. In the meantime, remove items such as medications, sharp objects and firearms.<\/li>\n<li>Take care of yourself too.
