Myanmar\u2019s grand dame hotel, The Strand Yangon, will reopen on 15th\u00a0November 2016 after a restoration project that has seen this luxury heritage hotel ushered\u00a0elegantly into the 21st\u00a0century.\u00a0The Strand Yangon was one of the first luxury colonial outposts\u00a0to open\u00a0in South East Asia,\u00a0founded\u00a0in 1901\u00a0by the famous hoteliers, the\u00a0Sarkiesbrothers,\u00a0and it remains one of the most architecturally beautiful landmarks in\u00a0the region.<\/p>\n

As part of the six-month renovation\u00a0of The Strand Yangon, local artisans have meticulously restored every original architectural detail of The Strand Yangon, from the teak panelling and antique bedsteads, to traditional Myanmar lacquer\u00a0ware and marble flooring.\u00a0\u00a0Meanwhile,\u00a0the hotel\u2019s 31 light and airy\u00a0rooms and\u00a0suites\u00a0have\u00a0had their traditional d\u00e9cor complemented with vintage inspired textiles and original artwork, updated with modern air conditioning systems and the latest in-room technology.<\/p>\n

Yangon\u2019s most elegant dining room, The Strand Restaurant,\u00a0with its\u00a0high vaulted ceiling,\u00a0sparkling chandeliers and museum quality black and gold lacquer panels from Bagan, has welcomed\u00a0a new Executive chef, Christian\u00a0Martena\u00a0who has been trained\u00a0within\u00a0some of Europe\u2019s most famous Michelin-starred kitchens before running his own acclaimed restaurant\u00a0in Bangkok.\u00a0 The Strand Restaurant will be open\u00a0from 1st\u00a0December 2016\u00a0for dinner\u00a0four\u00a0nights a week and serve a seasonal menu of classic Mediterranean dishes enhanced with locally sourced ingredients.<\/p>\n

Chef\u00a0Christian will oversee\u00a0the food concept\u00a0throughout the hotel, including the more casual Strand Caf\u00e9,\u00a0a warm and welcoming respite from the bustle of the Yangon Road,\u00a0open all day for\u00a0coffee, pastries or a light lunch of Western or traditional Myanmar cuisine.\u00a0 The Strand Caf\u00e9 is also\u00a0home to the famous Strand High Tea,\u00a0which\u00a0has been\u00a0preserved and expanded with more\u00a0traditional\u00a0and\u00a0Myanmar delicacies.<\/p>\n

The hotel\u2019s bar, for over a century the epicentre of social life in Yangon\u00a0and\u00a0gathering place\u00a0for many adventurers, raconteurs and explorers\u00a0such as\u00a0Sir No\u00ebl\u00a0Coward,\u00a0Orsen\u00a0Welles and Rudyard Kipling, has been renamed The\u00a0Sarkies\u00a0Bar at The Strand\u00a0Hotel\u00a0in honour of the hotel\u2019s founders,\u00a0Aviet\u00a0and Tigran\u00a0Sarkies, the\u00a0brothers\u00a0responsible for many of the finest colonial hotels in the region, such as Raffles in Singapore and the Eastern & Oriental in Penang.\u00a0 The teakwood-panelled bar has been given a glamorous \u2018club\u2019 like atmosphere, with leather seating and an extensive new menu of cocktails and single malt whiskies.<\/p>\n
