<\/p>\nThe inaugural Royal Selangor Design Week took place on last Tuesday, 25 October 2016, with an exciting series of round table talks and presentations on the crucial elements that shape contemporary design.<\/p>\n
Featuring a line-up of award-winning designers, the conference at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral kicked-off with \u201cChairplay – Between Standing Up and Lying Down\u201d, Freeman Lau\u2019s thought-provoking opening keynote address that explored the hidden symbolism behind the design of a chair.<\/p>\n

Singaporean designer Jarrod Lim then touched on the benefits of design thinking in \u201cGet Ahead of Competition with Design\u201d. The complexities of cross-cultural design were the focus of the \u201cIn-Between State\u201d presentation by Voon Wong and Ian Macready of Viewport Studio, while Jamy Yang shares his experiences on combining traditional craftsmanship and modern design in \u201cContemporary Design Meets Traditional Craft\u201d.<\/p>\n
Seasoned designers also cut deep into the hard issues surrounding the design profession and the creative community in a series of lively panel discussions. In \u201cDesign & Innovation\u201d, Jarrod Lim, Nathan Yong and Jamy Yang were joined by Lillian Tay, the Senior Principal of VERITAS Architects, as they shared their ideas on enhancing group creativity and what makes for a successful collaboration.<\/p>\n
The event concluded with Lauren Sizeland, Director of Business Development and Licensing from London\u2019s Victoria & Albert Museum, sharing how the museum collaborates with trend forecasters to identify the latest global design themes.<\/p>\n
