A great deal of\u00a0mystique\u00a0surrounds wine,\u00a0along with many\u00a0\u2018wine-wisdoms\u2019 \u00a0that are\u00a0actually\u00a0misleading myths.\u00a0These common misconceptions\u00a0can lead to embarrassing moments of not really knowing the\u00a0facts;\u00a0Britain\u2019s original wine and spirits merchant\u00a0Berry Bros. & Rudd<\/a>\u00a0set the record straight, sharing their\u00a0top ten wine myths, whilst dispelling mistaken beliefs with reality.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Belief: Wine\u00a0Gets Better with Age<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Reality:<\/strong>\u00a0Most wines do not “age gracefully” in the bottle, but go from fresh to stale.\u00a0They are generally\u00a0made\u00a0for drinking within a year or two of their release. Only about 1% of all wines\u00a0improve with long-term cellaring (5-10 years).\u00a0 Often less approachable on release, they actually require the time to develop to reach a peak level of enjoyment.<\/p>\n

Belief:\u00a0Expensive\u00a0Wines are\u00a0Better\u00a0Wines<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"wine\"Reality:<\/strong>\u00a0The question becomes what defines \u2018better\u2019.\u00a0Remember wine prices are not only influenced by quality. Image\u00a0\u2013 along with market conditions, demand\u00a0and\u00a0even currency fluctuations \u2013\u00a0influence the\u00a0price.\u00a0Less familiar wines from more unfashionable regions and\u00a0producers\u00a0can\u00a0also\u00a0offer\u00a0surprisingly\u00a0good value for money.<\/p>\n

Belief: Heavier Bottles\u00a0are Higher Quality Wines<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Reality:<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t judge a book by its cover. Some winemakers put their most expensive wines in heavy bottles in an attempt to justify a hefty price to match. A heavier bottle certainly indicates that the winery has made\u00a0a substantial investment in the packaging. But that doesn\u2019t guarantee exceptional\u00a0wine.\u00a0The cost of shipping heavier packing costs more, which is built into the final retail price!\u00a0\u00a0Enjoyable to ponder over a nice dinner and\u00a0less\u00a0suited to a Barbeque\u00a0or junk trip.<\/p>\n

Belief:\u00a0Wine Doesn’t go with Chinese Food<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Reality:\u00a0<\/strong>Not true, if you choose suitable wine.\u00a0Chinese food pairs\u00a0perfectly\u00a0with wines\u00a0that have\u00a0high acidity, lower alcohol and relatively understated flavours and aromas, like\u00a0Riesling\u00a0if you prefer white wine, or\u00a0Pinot Noir\u00a0if you like red.<\/p>\n

Belief:\u00a0Serious wines are always sealed with\u00a0cork.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Reality:<\/strong>\u00a0This is generally the case, as cork has long dominated the market as the preferred closure for its ability to allow small amount of oxygen into the wine to help aid its evolution \u2013 an important aspect for reds.\u00a0It is a falicy though to think that wines don\u2019t mature well under\u00a0screw-cap.\u00a0Many very high quality wines now use screwcaps.<\/p>\n

Belief:\u00a0The Only Heart-friendly\u00a0Alcohol is Red Wine<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Reality:\u00a0<\/strong>Beer, wine, and liquors all confer the same health benefits.\u00a0The so-called French Paradox\u00a0claimed health-food status for red wine before subsequent research revealed that it\u2019s not antioxidants\u00a0that protect against heart disease, but alcohol, which\u00a0raises levels of HDL, or good cholesterol,\u00a0preventing\u00a0plaque buildup in the arteries and reducing\u00a0clotting factors that contribute to heart attack and stroke.\u00a0Any\u00a0alcoholic beverageconsumed in moderation (one to two drinks a day)\u00a0can help to\u00a0reduce heart disease risk.’<\/p>\n

Belief: Red Wine causes more Headaches than White Whine Due to a Higher Sulfite \"red-and-white-wine-2-1057543\"Content<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Reality:\u00a0<\/strong>Sulfites (sulfur\u00a0dioxide)\u00a0is\u00a0a preservative in many common daily foods, and does\u00a0not cause headaches. Red wine has\u00a0less added sulfites than white wines,\u00a0as the tannin derived from\u00a0grape skins\u00a0provide an additional\u00a0natural preservatives.\u00a0So\u00a0white wines, which don\u2019t tannins and are generally lower in alcohol (alcohol is also a preservative)\u00a0require more sulfites to prevent oxidation.\u00a0The cause of headaches\u00a0(the body\u2019s reaction\u00a0is\u00a0to releasing histimines) or\u00a0dehydration.\u00a0To avoid a hangover\u00a0headache, drink in moderation\u00a0and\u00a0rehydrate with\u00a0water before you go to bed.<\/p>\n

Belief: Cheese and\u00a0Wine\u00a0Always Pair\u00a0Perfectly<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Not all cheese goes well with wine!\u00a0Heavy textured\u00a0and\u00a0strong tasting cheeses\u00a0overpower the tongue\u2019s\u00a0ability to fully enjoy the richness and\u00a0balance of a good wine –\u00a0Pair\u00a0cheese and wine carefully\u00a0to ensure a great tasting experience, with a\u00a0softer, milder\u00a0cheese\u00a0like\u00a0Brie.<\/p>\n

Belief: “Legs” are Evidence of a\u00a0High-quality Wine<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Reality:\u00a0<\/strong>Legs, or “tears”,\u00a0as\u00a0the streaks that flow down a wine glass when you swirl are called, only indicate viscosity, largely attributable to alcohol content. The phenomenon is caused by alcohol evaporating at a faster rate and having a lower surface tension than water. The higher the alcohol, the fatter the legs and fuller-bodied wines generally have slower dripping legs.<\/p>\n

Belief:<\/strong> Open the bottle to let it breathe.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

Reality:\u00a0<\/strong>Simply uncorking a bottle\u00a0does not sufficiently aerate\u00a0wine, because the\u00a0narrow bottleneck restricts air.\u00a0Letting the wine breathe in your glass is more effective, or pouring into a\u00a0decanter. A\u00a0midway\u00a0tip is to pour a little wine into a glass, replace the cork or screw, and shake the bottle a little to aerate your wine\u00a0to release all its flavours and aromas.<\/p>\n
