{"id":17392,"date":"2016-04-07T09:00:44","date_gmt":"2016-04-07T01:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/?p=17392"},"modified":"2016-04-08T01:04:48","modified_gmt":"2016-04-07T17:04:48","slug":"world-health-day-2016-beat-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/health\/world-health-day-2016-beat-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"World Health Day 2016: Beat Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>World Health Day <\/strong>is celebrated on the 7th day of April every year to promote awareness to different health topics.\u00a0This year, the theme of World Health Day 2016\u00a0is &#8220;Beats Diabetes&#8221; which focus on the rising tide of\u00a0diabetes worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a>, an estimated 347 million people in the world had diabetes in 2008 and the prevalence is growing, particularly in low and middle income countries.\u00a0In 2012, the disease was the direct cause of some 1.5 million deaths, with more than 80% of those occurring in low- and middle-income countries. In 2014 the global prevalence of diabetes was estimated to be 9% among adults aged 18+ years. WHO projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death by 2030.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is diabetes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17394 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"diabetes\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-696x465.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes-629x420.jpg 629w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/diabetes.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body&#8217;s systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How many type of diabetes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are two major forms of diabetes.\u00a0<strong>Type 1 diabetes<\/strong> is characterized by a lack of insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin\u00a0 The cause of type 1 diabetes is not known and it is not preventable with current knowledge. Symptoms include excessive excretion of urine (polyuria), thirst (polydipsia), constant hunger, weight loss, vision changes and fatigue. These symptoms may occur suddenly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Type 2 diabetes<\/strong> results from the body&#8217;s ineffective use of insulin,\u00a0largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity and comprises 90% of people with diabetes around the world.\u00a0Symptoms may be similar to those of Type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>A third type of diabetes is<strong> gestational diabetes,\u00a0<\/strong>is characterized by hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, with values above normal but below those diagnostic of diabetes, occurring during pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. They are also at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the future.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"section_head2\"><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"section_head2\"><\/h4>\n<h2 class=\"section_head1\"><strong>What are common consequences of diabetes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"disc\">\n<li>Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke\u00a0&#8211; study found\u00a050% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease (primarily heart disease and stroke).<\/li>\n<li>Combined with reduced blood flow, neuropathy (nerve damage) in the feet increases the chance of foot ulcers, infection and eventual need for limb amputation.<\/li>\n<li>Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness, and occurs as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. 1%\u00a0of global blindness can be attributed to diabetes.<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure.<\/li>\n<li>The overall risk of dying among people with diabetes is at least double the risk of their peers without diabetes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"section_head1\"><strong>What are the prevention &amp; treatments of diabetes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4 class=\"section_head2\"><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"disc\">\n<li>achieve and maintain healthy body weight;<\/li>\n<li>be physically active \u2013 at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. Tobacco use cessation is also important to avoid complications. Treatment interventions include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"disc\">\n<li>moderate blood glucose control. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin; people with type 2 diabetes can be treated with oral medication, but may also require insulin;<\/li>\n<li>blood pressure control;<\/li>\n<li>foot care;<\/li>\n<li>screening and treatment for retinopathy (which causes blindness);<\/li>\n<li>blood lipid control (to regulate cholesterol levels);<\/li>\n<li>screening for early signs of diabetes-related kidney disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How to support the cause?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Share your stories, or advice, on measures that can be taken to prevent and manage diabetes.
