{"id":15281,"date":"2016-03-11T09:00:18","date_gmt":"2016-03-11T01:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/?p=15281"},"modified":"2016-03-10T23:29:31","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T15:29:31","slug":"tai-chi-and-qigong-could-be-beneficial-for-cardiovascular-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/health\/fitness-sports\/tai-chi-and-qigong-could-be-beneficial-for-cardiovascular-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Tai chi and Qigong Could be Beneficial for Cardiovascular Conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A new Chinese study has found that the country&#8217;s traditional mind-body exercises, which focus on posture, breathing, and meditation, may help to improve the health of individuals who have suffered from heart disease, high blood pressure or stroke.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For their research Chen Pei-Jie and his team from Shanghai University of Sport in China reviewed 35 studies, which looked at 2,249 participants in total from 10 different countries.<\/p>\n<p>The data showed that <strong>for individuals with cardiovascular disease, practising traditional Chinese exercise such\u00a0as Tai chi, Baduanjin and\u00a0Qigong helped to reduce\u00a0systolic blood pressure<\/strong> &#8212; which measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart muscle is contracting &#8212; by more than 9.12 mm Hg on average. And diastolic blood pressure &#8212; which measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart muscle is resting &#8212; was reduced by more than 5 mm Hg on average. The team believe that the results of their meta-analysis on blood pressure suggest that traditional Chinese exercise could help to lower the risk of of stroke by up to 41%, and coronary heart disease by up to 22%.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15284\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15284\" style=\"width: 628px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tai-chi1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15284\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tai-chi1.jpg\" alt=\"Image: revention.com\" width=\"628\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tai-chi1.jpg 628w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tai-chi1-150x87.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tai-chi1-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: revention.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The results also showed a small but <strong>statistically significant reduction in the levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides &#8211;<\/strong>&#8211; a type of fat found in the blood that can increase the risk of heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <strong>those that lived with cardiovascular disease but practised Chinese exercises also showed an improvement in overall quality of life and reduced levels of depression<\/strong> in comparison to the control group.<\/p>\n<p>However there was no significant improvement in heart rate or aerobic fitness level, or an improvement in participants&#8217; scores on a general health questionnaire.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers did acknowledge that their study had some limitations, such as the studies&#8217; failure to assess the possible long-term effects of traditional Chinese exercise, with participants monitored for just one year or less. And as there are many different types of traditional Chinese exercises, future studies could include a more detailed look at each subgroup of exercise.
