In Malaysia, it’s very common\u00a0to find our Malay friends especially ladies wearing their traditional clothes, such as baju kurung<\/a> and kebaya<\/a> in everyday life.\u00a0Many Indian ladies are always seen to wear\u00a0their traditional sarees<\/a>\u00a0on every occasions.\u00a0However when come to Chinese, it’s rare to see Chinese ladies in the traditional costume e.g.\u00a0cheongsam<\/a><\/strong>, which only can be spotted at wedding receptions or dinners occasionally –\u00a0of course those Chinese restaurants’\u00a0waitresses who\u00a0wear cheongsam\u00a0as uniform are not counted.<\/p>\n

The CHEONGSAM<\/a>, also known as Qi-Pao in Mandarin,\u00a0is a body-hugging one-piece Chinese dress for women.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Originating from a type of Manchurian female garment, the cheongsam made fashionable by socialites and upper class women in Shanghai, and becoming very popular between the late 1920s and 1960s. It is usually made from satin brocade, silk\u00a0or cotton, and some are beautifully embroidered.\u00a0Most cheongsams are made to be body-hugging outfit, designed with mandarin collar, fitted waist, Chinese knotted buttons, hemmed slits on two sides, a tailored form fit, which make it not easy to carry\u00a0and not suitable for\u00a0a wide range of movement. Probably these are two\u00a0of the reasons why the cheongsam is not commonly wear. \u00a0Even in China, most Chinese women wear modern style clothing instead of cheongsam in their daily life.<\/p>\n

The cheongsam is an elegant wear that’s\u00a0very attractive and incredibly feminine.\u00a0In the\u00a0film \u201cIn the Mood for Love<\/em>\u201d (2000) directed by\u00a0Kar Wai Wong, Maggie Cheung appears in a succession of over 30 different designer cheongsams each more elegant than the last.<\/p>\n
