Perfecting the Little Black Dress Look

The Little Black Dress – a woman’s best friend when it comes to the one essential that she must have in her wardrobe. Get this right and it will make (or break) your look. With the right LBD, so much can be achieved – a first date, a first interview, a presentation – but make sure you wear one that’s right for your body type. Just because it’s a LBD doesn’t mean it will automatically work or do its magic – it needs to look good and you need to work it.

Here we are sharing some tips on how you can perfect the LBD look. Follow these tips closely or add this to your list of research when it comes to perfecting your look and hopefully you’ll have it nailed.

1. The most important – get the right LBD for your body type

Essentially you know your body best and know which sections you want to accentuate and which you want to hide. Follow your intuition and look for styles that flatter you most. Just in case you need some help though, here are some tips:

– Pear shaped? You’re lucky to be able to pull of the halter neck black dress with ease. It will help balance your proportions and it’s a gorgeous look for anytime of the day. Dress it up with heels, dress it down with flats, dress it corporate with a jacket.
– Petite? For petite women, I feel you. Like me, I’m sure you struggle in finding the right LBD that fits our smaller frame and doesn’t drown us in its gloriousness. Look for designs that are form fitting or closely fitted, such as pencil skirt designs or those belted at the waist. Stick to knee-length dresses or slightly above, if you’re going to go any longer, the dress might wear you.
– Apple shaped? Look for dresses that gather at the waistline thus giving you more of a defined shape. Dresses that cinch at the waist are great, especially those that flow out into drapes. This balances your proportion.
– Curvy? You’re lucky so flaunt what you got. Look for a v-neck shaped dress that will open up your top and draw attention downwards and will give you a slimming effect

2. A warp dress looks great on all body types

When in doubt, look for a great wrap dress. It looks great on all body types and basically you can’t go wrong. I love wrap around dresses especially those that taper down into a pencil skirt. It hugs in all the right places and when it’s in black, even better.

3. Don’t be afraid to accessorise

Most times we forget that we can accessories a LBD. It’s easy to throw one on and feel great in it, and think “ok I’m looking fab, off I go”. But just hold that thought, what if you added a little belt, or those chunky earrings, how about a statement necklace? Black and gold are great colours to pair. Think about it the next time and you might surprise yourself. I have a pair of turquoise heels that I don’t wear with anything else but my LBD. The shoes are so bold that it needs the simplicity of a LBD to pull-off and it definitely did pay off.

4. Splurge!

When it comes to the LBD, this is worth investing in. You know you’ll wear it countless times. You know it will be you go-to dress when you just can’t think of anything else, and you know that it will suit ANY occasion. So why not invest in one that is made with quality and will last you years. I’ve gone through some that I bought since it was affordable, but years later and it’s either out of shape or just looks very worn… shame. I now need to hunt for my next LBD!

5. Find one that is versatile to be dressed up and dressed down

To achieve this look, simplicity is key. What makes a LBD casual or glamorous can be its accessories and the shoes you choose to wear with them. If you have a dress with particular accents, frills, and what not – it might be harder to achieve a versatile look.

6. T-strap Heels!

These add edge to your otherwise very simple shift dress or t-shirt dress. Wear it in a colour that pops (other than block) and you’ve got your look.

7. Don’t be scared to wear it with sneakers

Who says we have to only wear our LBD with heels? Add a pair of sneakers and you’re looking very street chic. I love this look and definitely one I’ll try myself.

8. How you style your hair is key

In addition to footwear and your accessories giving you a casual or slammed up look, how you style your hair is another important element. A high bun looks great for both night and day, long side swept waves for a more sophisticated or romantic look – for example. So don’t forget the tresses.

The LBD is an overall look as you can see. It isn’t just about the dress, there’s more to it. And that’s the beauty of it! Have fun with it and style it as you like.
