Designer JW Anderson has unveiled a long-term collaboration with iconic sneaker brand Converse which is set to release this Autumn following his Fall 2017 Capsule Collection with UNIQLO.
“When Converse approached me I couldn’t turn it down because it’s something that I wear,” he told Business of Fashion, adding that the pairing resonates with his vision for the brand to be more universal. Anderson revealed that the collaboration is also personal to him as for the first time ever he is eager about projecting his creative ideas and individuality into products.
The collection debuted at his Spring/Summer 2018 show in Pitti Uomo where models sported striking, colour-block Chuck Taylor All Star decked out in glitter, monogrammed high-tops in black and white, and Thunderbolt in muted colours such as navy and beige. A few exclusive pairs stamped with the JW Anderson logo were also gifted to the models after the show.
“When we came to Florence, I would see American and Japanese and British tourists walking around,” Anderson said. “I liked this idea of the kid in a denim short with a T-shirt and a pair of Converse,” added Anderson when asked about the inspirations behind the collaboration.
A video teaser and close-up shots of the collection were released after the show to give a sneak peek of the collection. “From my very first pair, Converse have represented such a radical movement in style and culture,” Anderson mentioned in a statement. “The contrasts and similarities between the world of Converse and the world of JW Anderson creates a space of culture tension that’s a dream to play within as a designer.”
