Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is an issue that affects one in four people. Treating the issue at the source means fresher breath wherever you are during the day.

“It’s important to know the cause of the bad breath,” notes New York City based celebrity cosmetic dentist Dr Victoria Veytsman. “Certain medications or health conditions may be the culprit. Although most morning breath is caused by dry mouth.” She continues, “Lack of saliva production goes down as one sleeps. Saliva fights bacteria that causes bad breath.”

Once you figure out the causes and amend your habits, bad breath is not difficult to treat. To help with dry mouth Dr Veytsman recommends the tricks as below.

1. Avoid alcohol based mouth rinses which can dry out the mouth
2. Floss to ensure that you’ve thoroughly removed all food particles
3. Tongue scraping help rid the mouth of bacteria. A pink tongue is fresh while one coated in white is a sign of bad breath and bacterial buildup
4. The way you sleep can affect morning breath. Snoring or sleeping open mouthed causes the mouth to get drier. Try elevating your head or try breathe rite strips.
5. Add a humidifier to moisten the room
6. Limit caffeine intake
7. Stop smoking or using tobacco products
8. Drink plenty of water
