Survey Revealed Malaysian Women Sitting Longer at Their Desks than Men

According to ‘Nutrition at Work’ survey conducted by nutrition company Herbalife, 90 percent of Malaysian women spend more than six hours a day at their desks, compared to men who polled slightly lower at 80 percent.

“This survey indicates that Malaysian workers tend to neglect exercise due to their commitment to work,” said Sridhar Rajagopalan, sub-regional general manager of Herbalife Malaysia and Singapore.

Additionally, 52 percent of women said they have lunch at their desk at least twice a week compared to only 45 percent of men. The survey further found that 57 percent of women said that it is harder for them to stay active while at work compared to 50 percent of men.

The idea of a more active nation is not entirely neglected, as Malaysians are generally aware of the repercussions of a sedentary lifestyle. For example:

  • 74 percent of women said they are concerned about weight gain compared to 71 percent of men.
  • 64 percent of women cited lack of energy as a main reason for not living an active lifestyle
  • 53 percent of women said poor digestive health stopped them from being more active compared to 45 percent of men.

The survey was conducted to further understand the lifestyle trend of full-time workers in the Asia Pacific Region, where 500 of the 5,500 respondents aged 18 and above polled were Malaysians, and the rest are from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
