Participants of Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed)’s Fit2Climb Challenge, who are diabetic and overweight, proved this right when they successfully conquered Broga Hill recently as the finale of their inspiring 3-month journey. After a series of coaching, workshops and physical training sessions, the final 11 participants braved it out as they successfully made it up one of the most popular hiking trails in the Klang Valley.

The Fit2Climb Challenge was introduced in conjunction with SunMed’s World Diabetes Day 2015 campaign themed Eliminate Diabetes. In order to qualify for the challenge, members of the public had to go through a rigorous selection process which kicked-off on October 2015. The chosen participants were then asked to attend workshops to fully prepare themselves mentally and physically for the final climb up Broga Hill.

Participating in the Fit2Climb Challenge was a rewarding endeavour for the participants, but they were also in it to win. To stand a chance of winning, participants had to attend all workshop sessions, conquer the climb, achieve at least 5% body weight loss as well as reduction of total body fat and reduction of their triglycerides level. Noras’kin Mohamad, 33, walked home the proud winner in the individual category, losing 14.6% of her body fat, 33% of her body weight and a vast improvement in her TG level (reduced 13%).

Aside from rewarding the participant with the most percentage of body weight and body fat loss, SunMed also took the opportunity to present LEAN Spirit Awards to participants who remained motivated, persistent, maintained a balanced diet and exercise and continued to inspire their fellow challenge-mates throughout the entire programme.

In addition to the Fit2Climb Challenge, SunMed’s World Diabetes Day 2015 also saw the launch of the 30 Days to Happy Kidneys campaign, in conjunction with the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) which has been extended until 6 March 2016.
