Makeup products do not last forever. I know it is common that we have lipsticks at home that we can’t bear to throw away. There are some makeup products that we only used once and never use it again, but we just can’t bring ourself to throw it away. It is time to start throwing out the makeup you had for years as expired cosmetic is harmful to you!

Basically, most of the lipstick can last up to two years as long as it smells and looks just fine. If you are a lipstick lover but you have sensitive lips, be careful of the expired lipstick as it may cause itchiness and redness. When a lipstick looks and feels dry, change in texture, you just have to throw it away.

Mascara and liquid eyeliner

Do you know that mascara has the shortest life span of all make up? As mascara is applied to eyelashes and it is very close to our eyes, we need to get every new tube every three to four months. If your mascara smells less than fresh, toss it away!

Liquid foundation

Do buy foundation that is with small openings or small packaging. Try not to touch the actual product as much as it is possible for the bacteria to spread, thus it shortens the life of your make up. When the colour changes, just go ahead and buy a new bottle.

Blush

Most of us use blush with makeup brushes, so we need to clean our make up brushes on a weekly basis to stay bacteria-free. If the powder has gone dry and flaky, it is a sign it is not good anymore.

Pencil liner and lip liner

If you are someone who likes to use pencil liner and lip liner, good news! The beauty about pencils is that they can be sharpened to refreshed regularly, so just make sure you get it sharpened regularly. If you can see a white dot on the end that doesn’t go away when you sharpen the pencil, do not keep it anymore.

When makeup expires, the efficiency of active ingredients also becomes compromised over time. If the expired molecules in these products break into something else, you may have a reaction to it. Bacteria that build up on your skin or eyes will cause a lot of problems that you can never imagine. It may be irritation, inflammation, redness, bumps, a rash or even swelling of the skin.  You would not want it to happen to your skin! In short, do take note on the expiry date of each makeup product.
